Lush is great! From the company ethics and ingredients to the products themselves, Lush is great! I have been using Lush products for years now and I have loved pretty much everything I have tried! Not even joking, I have not had a single bad Lush experience! In fact, once I met Michelle Visage in a Lush store so I guess I have the best experiences with Lush! (She was absolutely wonderful and bought a bath bomb I recommended)!!

Over the years, I have tried a wide variety of Lush products and i'm going to share them with you now! I don't have all of them currently (I don't have unlimited Lush funds, unfortunately) but I have photographed everything I can and I will link everything so you can check out the products on the Lush website!

Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter

Listen up! This stuff is magical! I often neglect my cuticles but whenever I use this they appear instantly replenished! It's a miracle! This little tub of lemony goodness also lasts forever because a little goes a very long way! It's not just for your cuticles too! This stuff works super well on the dry skin just about anywhere. In fact, I love to use it on my elbows when they get all dry and flakey! I love Lush potted products too because once you are done with the product, you can give 5 clean pots to your local Lush store and get a free fresh face mask!

Speaking of fresh face masks, BB Seaweed is the first on this list! It's a lovely mask full of great ingredients such as seaweed and calming aloe vera. It removes the excess oil from your skin and gently exfoliates, leaving your face feeling super soft and clean! This was the first fresh mask I bought from Lush and it's safe to say that it got me hooked on their skincare products! Bonus points for the fact that you feel like Shrek when you wear the green lumpy mask.

Tea Tree Toner Water

This toner is a more recent fave. It's a toner spray so it's super quick and simple to throw it on your face to freshen it up! It sinks into the skin super quickly and fights the oil and redness which I usually experience on my face surprisingly amazingly! I prefer this facial spray to any others I have used and I intend to keep repurchasing it once it has run out!

Cosmetic Warrior

At first, I was super hesitant to try this mask. It contains garlic and I was super sure that it would leave me feeling like I had just covered my face with aioli. However, this mask doesn't smell strongly of garlic and is an absolute wonder for oily and spotty skin! When I have a ton of deadlines or exams on the way, I pick up a pot of this mask to combat the stress breakouts and it does a world of good! It leaves my face feeling super clean and refreshed and really fights the breakouts well! Definitely my favourite mask!

Sleepy Body Lotion

Sleepy is a wonderful body lotion which smells strongly of lavender and tonka. When I am having a restless night, I rub this lotion over my arms or just my forearms and the smell sends me to sleep so nicely! It feels wonderful and I cannot emphasise enough how good it smells! No wonder it is so highly rated!

Intergalactic Bath Bomb

This is the prettiest and freshest bath bomb I have ever tried! It strongly smells of peppermint and cedarwood which wakes up the senses, clears the sinuses and leaves you feeling so refreshed and clean! It is a blue explosion of glitter in the bath and is such a special treat! I used to use this one weekly after a couple of weekend shifts working in a fast food restaurant kitchen. It was the only way I could feel fresh and not paranoid about smelling like the food I had been cooking all weekend!

Twilight Body Spray

I had wanted this spray for months and months! The other week when I was feeling like crap and wanted to treat myself, I finally bought it and WOW was it worth it! It smells strongly of lavender (my favourite scent) and tonka and leaves me feeling so relaxed! It would work great before bed but I love the smell too much so I wear this all day every day! It has great staying power and pretty much clings to all of my clothes! A definite favourite!

Whoosh Shower Jelly

In my first year at university, I lived in halls of residence and had an ensuite shower and no bath. I wanted to still treat myself to some Lush goodness so I picked up this shower jelly. And then I repurchased it again and again! This stuff smells so good, very citrusy! It is perfect in the mornings before uni when you just need to get up and go, feeling energised and refreshed as you jump out of the shower!

H'Suan Wen Hua Hair Treatment

This hard-to-pronounce hair mask is a miracle! My hair has been damaged and lacklustre for so long but since I switched up my hair routine, including this and switching out my usual shampoo and conditioner, my hair is so different! After using this, my hair feels so much more healthy and sleek. Plus, it's easier to brush and way less high maintenance! As I said, this stuff is a miracle! It smells lovely and spicy, with hints of cinnamon!

Twilight Bath Bomb

A classic! This was the first Lush product I ever picked up! It smells, as you can expect from my previous faves, like lavender and tonka and makes your bathwater look like a beautiful galaxy of purple! Plus, it's so glittery! It looks magical! A bath in this is perfect on a restless night or after a long day when you just need to have a proper relax!

Helping Hands Hand Cream

I started using this hand cream when I was working in the fast food restaurant and was washing my hands SO much all the time! Even after work because I felt gross! This hand cream is intensively moisturising and it was originally made with nurses in mind! It takes a little while to sink in and I usually use it at night before bed, with Lemony Flutter on my cuticles so I wake up with lovely soft and moisturised hands!

My Lush Wishlist

These are the products from Lush that I am aching to try next!:

Thank you for reading! Let me know what you think of the products I have mentioned and what your faves are! x

Another week, another Pull Yourself Together post! Hope you enjoy! x

Monday
  • Today is just a typical Monday! I'm going to uni, doing some work and I have a meeting! I feel a bit crap so I decided to put on some nice makeup and a nice outfit to make myself feel a bit more pulled together!
  • I got quite a bit of work done, posted last week's Pull Yourself Together post and now I've got a meeting with some friends i'm doing some peer support work with next academic year!
  • The meeting was super productive and we all sorted our roles within the scheme and set some plans in place! I am looking forward to seeing how this all works out!
  • Chloe and I decided to get some food together so we headed over to Wetherspoons for some nice grub!
  • After spoons, Chloe and I had a quick trip to Superdrug and then I headed home to do some work before bed!

Tuesday
  • Busy busy day ahead! I'm heading to uni to do some work and then i'm helping out my psychology peer mentor scheme with a lab support session.
  • The support session went well and the first years seemed to be engaged and asked a few questions. After the event, I met with a friend and a lecturer to talk about the psychology peer mentor scheme and then had a very quick lunch.
  • I had a careers meeting with one of the psychology careers advisors and talked a bit about paid internships for the summer. I am desperate for an internship this summer and the meeting really helped!
  • After the careers meeting, I went to a networking event held by the university in which alumni who work in media were invited to talk and network with students. It was super interesting and I got to meet some very interesting people!
  • After the event, I hopped onto a bus into town and had a small dinner in Starbucks, before meeting up with a couple of friends in Byron for a milkshake.
  • We met with some more friends and went to see Black Panther. It was incredible and definitely a new favourite film!
  • After the film, we went home and had a couple of drinks before bed.

Wednesday
  • Early start this morning for a doctors appointment! I need to get some things sorted because my mental health is not the best again and I don't want to fall back into the way I was a few months ago.
  • The appointment went well and i'm now in Anchor Coffee House doing a bit of work and eating a lovely bagel! My favourite! I've come up with a couple of post ideas and started a post about free online learning because I know some good sites and want to share them with as many people as possible so everyone gets the chance to try them out!
  • After a couple of hours at Anchor, I got a bit restless so I headed over to the Whitworth Art Gallery to do some reading. It was a lovely change of scenery and i'm loving my current book!

  • I then headed over to university for the most exciting part of the day! I have been helping a society to put together a mentoring scheme and we had our first training session this afternoon/evening!
  • The training went so well and I am over the moon! Everything about this scheme is coming together and I love it!
  • After the training, I got a call from Chloe and our friend and they got me to meet them in town for Pizza Hut!! It was so good (even though those two argue so much) and I ended up so full and happy!
  • Once I got home, I just did some work in bed!

Thursday
  • Not a very busy day here for once! Just heading to uni as usual to do a bit of work, then I have a seminar and then back to do some work! Meeting with a friend later but not sure what we'll get up to! The uni strikes begin today so I have no lectures to go to, which gives me some time to catch up on work.
  • The seminar went well, we got to choose our groups for some group work, and now i'm just waiting for my friend! We have decided to go see Black Panther and i'm so excited to see it again!
  • We got dinner at Wetherspoons and the saw the movie, which was just as good the second time around! I am obsessed! After that, I rushed home in the dark because I get a bit anxious walking home at night and it was very late! I pretty much went straight to bed!

Friday
  • Not much to do today! Just a couple of workshops and some laundry!
  • I posted my Free Learning post and it is already getting a lot more views than my usual content! I am so excited that people are finding it helpful!
  • My first workshop was on reflective writing and it was super helpful for one of my upcoming assignments. Plus, they had free drinks and biscuits which was great.
  • I went over to the psychology building for lunch and to do some work and then back to the learning commons for another workshop, which was a silent working drop-in for productivity. I got loads done and drank lots of hot chocolate!
  • Once out of the workshop, I rushed home and got my laundry done. I also tidied my room and had a spring clean and now i'm just going to watch a movie in bed!

Saturday
  • Having a super great lazy morning! I'm going to get up late, do a hair mask, do a face mask, have a shower and then get ready for work! Having a mostly offline and off-screen day so I may not update until later!
  • This morning was wonderful! It was so good to just be lazy! On my way to work now but i'm feeling very relaxed and prepared for the evening at work!
  • After work, a friend and I went to Nandos for dinner! It was so good! I then rushed home and got straight into bed!

Sunday
  • Such an exciting day! I have work and then i'm seeing my family! They're dropping off my mail and taking me grocery shopping! The best kind of shopping! Then, Will's home after a week away!
  • Before work, I had some coffee and breakfast in Starbucks and did an hour of work. It was so lovely and peaceful! I love being in town early on a Sunday morning because it's just so quiet!
  • Work was super quiet and went slowly but it was alright! I was on shift with good friends and one was very hungover so we teased him quite a bit!
  • Seeing my family was so lovely! We met in town and did a bit of shopping, which was great because they took me to ASDA in their car so I could pick up more food than usual because I usually have to carry it all the way home!
  • Once home, I put all my food away and tidied my room before Will came over. We drank prosecco, ate cake and watched a few episodes of Ashes To Ashes before having an early night. It was wonderful!
I hope you all had a lovely week and I will be back again next week with another Pull Yourself Together post!! (But also on Wednesday and Friday with my usual posts)! x

Friday 23 February 2018

I love education. Learning is a great passion of mine and I love to branch out far from my actual degree and to read about all sorts of topics! There are a wide variety of free learning resources out there and I figured I would compile a list of all the ones I have found so far! However, the list is endless and if you know any good ones which I have missed out, please let me know!

I am starting with the absolute king of free online learning resources! Khan Academy is a treasure trove of courses and informative videos and there is no end to the amount you can learn on there! You can use it to supplement a course you are already taking (it saved me when I was studying A-Level Biology), or you can start from the beginning and learn something completely new! For me, I have missed learning about history so much and so in my time off from uni I like to work my way through a history module!

If languages are more your thing, Duolingo has you covered! I am using Duolingo to brush up on my French but you can learn pretty much any language on there (even Welsh!!) and it's free! Again, you can use it to start completely from the beginning or you can supplement your ongoing learning. Either way, Duolingo is absolutely fantastic!

Crash Course is a YouTube channel dedicated to learning! They have so many courses available on there and each video lesson is presented so well visually! I love it when lessons contain lots of graphics and engaging visuals as it really helps the information to stick! For me, the lessons delivered by Hank Green are the most engaging video lessons out there! He's just so enthusiastic and clearly has a passion for what he does!

Of course, i'm mentioning TED here! TED has a massive back catalogue of talks on any subject you can possibly think of and it is a massive bank of information! All of the speakers have been selected because they are outstanding in their own fields and so are completely engaging about their own subjects! The TED slogan is 'ideas worth spreading' and they definitely show this in their content! If you want to watch some of my favourite talks, the link to my post is HERE!

Run by the Open University, Open Learn is a collection of free online learning courses. Upon completion, you get a certificate of participation and they offer a wide variety of courses! I feel like the best part of this particular resource is that they tell you how many hours each course takes and the level at which the content is. This means that you can take on courses at a rate suited to you and can dip your toe into a variety of areas to work out what you educational interests are! They also have a YouTube channel HERE!

Blinkist

Not all elements of Blinkist are free, but the free version is brilliant! You have the chance to read from a different pre-selected piece of text every day, each very different to the last. These are all bite-sized pieces and can lead you on to reading more on each subject if you find something particularly interesting! I love opening the app each day and seeing which text waits for me. You can download the app on iTunes HERE or the Google Play store HERE!

edX

This website brings together a massive amount of free courses from universities all over the world! All the courses are free but you can pay extra to get a verified certificate of education. I could spend hours purely just browsing through the different courses as there are so many out there. All the courses are self-paced which means they are super flexible and can work with any schedule!

Alison

Similar to a few sites on this list, Alison has a wide range of self-paced courses which you can select based on the amount of time you have to dedicate to your learning. The assessments can all be retaken and you need to score 80% or above in each unit in order to pass the courses. They also give you the option to buy your certificate or diploma and will ship it to you for free.

Future Learn

With 145 partner universities, Future Learn has a massive variety of courses which can work with any schedule! You can buy your certificate of participation separately but all the courses are free to join. They have connected with different universities worldwide so there is a massive range of courses you can choose from!

I hope that you have gained something from this post and I hope that you enjoy any course you may pick up from the sources in this post! Let me know if you have any faves which I have not mentioned here! I would love to add them or make a further post in the future! x

Wednesday 21 February 2018

So, this post is pretty contradictory to my 'Dealing With Uncertainty' post but, let's be honest, i'm a sucker for planning everything I can! Plus, some things can be planned, even if you are not guaranteed your perfect outcome! This stands for many different aspects of life and i'm going to cover a few in this post... So let's get started!

Career stuff

So, one thing that many people plan for is their perfect career! There is are many steps that you can take towards your future jobs and these are just a few!

It's important to network! This is essential to get your foot in the door and LinkedIn is a great tool at your disposal! Just set up a profile and fill in your education and experience. Then, whenever you take part in anything relevant to your goal career, log it on LinkedIn. If you have an idea of where you want to work, have a search for connections you can make. It is so easy to use and can benefit you so much!

Another useful website for career planning is Prospects. This site has a wide variety of helpful resources including job profiles, a guide for what you can do with your degree, university application advice, job interview tips and CV advice! Honestly, this site is perfect to refer back to whenever thinking about your future career, it just holds so much information and support!

In terms of gaining experience, volunteering is a great way to build your resume if you have the time! You can find volunteer positions in just about any sector and it's a great way to show your enthusiasm and dedication to future employers! It is also incredibly fulfilling and a great way to support causes dear to your heart! I do a lot of volunteer peer support work within my university, as well as mental health and community work roles! In the UK, you can easily find volunteer positions through sites such as Do-it.

The near future

Making plans for the future can be daunting, so planning for the near future can be a good start! This can be as simple as making a to-do list every morning for the day ahead, or as creative as keeping a full bullet journal complete with daily spreads, habit trackers, etc.

Personally, I like to have different small notebooks for different purposes because I have so many different things going on at once and I don't like to muddle it all up! I have a blogging book in which I make all my blog post plans, mind maps and to-dos. It's such a scruffy notebook but it has so many plans in it so I love it! I also have a to-do list pad which I carry around with me because it's easy and compact! Additionally, I have essay planning sheets, a peer-support notebook and my phone notes! I'm a very messy and scattered person but I know many people who have a much more systematic method of organisation and planning. For example, if you search 'bullet journal' on Tumblr, you can see the most beautifully laid out to-do lists and diaries!

Education

Are you a student looking to pick your GCSE subjects, A Level subjects, uni course or any other further education course? Believe me, I know how stressful it can be! It feels like these subjects will determine your life and that this choice decides your whole future! First of all, there are many ways in which this isn't correct! I know so many people who have decided on their career paths later on and have been able to apply whatever they have studied to their careers, no matter how different the subject seems to the job!

One piece of advice that I have for you is to do what you want, not what your peers or family expect from you! At the end of the day, you are tailoring your own education and you are the one who will be taking the classes and sitting the exams! Do something you know you will enjoy and be passionate about and you are so much more likely to succeed! This goes for any level of education!

I also wanted to chat about choosing your university/college! It's a massively daunting choice and you can feel so overwhelmed by the number of courses and universities out there! This is what I did to choose my university!

  • Go to open days! As many as you can manage! I was dead set on one particular university until I went to an open day there and it completely changed my mind and set me on the path to a university which I absolutely love! If I had gone there, I would have hated it!
  • University league tables are a quick and easy reference which you can use to see how your prospective university compares to all the others! Most of them also show student satisfaction, which is something you should seriously consider when looking for your ideal university! In the UK, this table by the Complete University Guide is such a good resource!
  • When you are going to university, it's not just the course and university rankings you should take into consideration! You will be living and studying in a city and you should research the city just as much as the uni itself. Consider whether you would be more comfortable in a city or a quieter area, as I know many people who have dropped out due to being overwhelmed by living in a big city! Have a look at the music scene, culture, events and places you can visit in your downtime. Will you love your new home?
  • Prospectuses can also be so helpful! I wish I had known it when I was applying for uni, but WhatUni actually let you choose which prospectuses you want to read and actually ship them to you!

Money stuff

I need to get better at this, but planning and tracking your spending can really help you save up some money for the big things, or just to have a buffer for a rainy day! The first thing you should do if you're planning on saving some money is to go through your bank statements and look at how much you spend on a daily basis and what you can cut out of the equation! For me, unsurprisingly, I spend a massive amount on coffee! I have a couple of coffees out and about a day and this really adds up to a massive amount! What can I do? I can cut down my use of disposable cups to make a small saving, and I can cut down to one coffee a day and make it a more budget-friendly coffee. I can also eat fewer takeaways, eat out less and stop buying food in university when I can make it at home!

Apps are always a good and easy way to track your spending because you are logging everything and so have to think more about the purchases you make, rather than just running around and paying with contactless and telling the cashier that you don't want a receipt!

If you have a savings account, be stricter with it! Once you put your money in there, be restrained and don't let yourself take it straight back out again! Designate a spending period once a month to pick up non-essentials and to treat yourself! For me, i'm making this my payday weekend, but instead of spending my whole pay packet, I will be putting half of it straight into my savings!

Finally, I am a sucker for using my overdraft! While it is there for a reason, it is so stressful to get so deep into your overdraft that you feel like you will never be out of it! Try to limit your use of it and use it only as a buffer when you really need it for an essential like surprise costs or rent!

Goals

Have clear goals! I know you've probably read this a thousand times but having clear achievable goals so important to be able to plan and track your progress! In my post about Small Achievements and Why They Matter, I talked about how setting smaller goals can keep you on track and also make you feel better about your progress. Setting smaller goals on your way to large goals can really make a world of change and really help you to make your plans, structured around these goals.

While looking forward is important...

Focus on what you can do now. It's all well and good planning for the future but it is important that once you do that you take steps in the present with the future in mind. It's good to have goals and aspirations, but it is pointless if you do not start to work towards them in the present to prevent them from remaining just as goals.

I hope that you found this post helpful! I would love to know what you think! x

Monday 19 February 2018

Monday
  • Early start for a morning lecture! It was a pretty dull one but I managed to get some good notes done!
  • I went straight to the psych building cafe after the lecture to get some work and admin done! I had a really productive few hours!
  • I managed to edit and post last week's Pull Yourself Together post and promote that on social media in between my uni tasks!
  • I had a very productive meeting with a friend about setting up a mental health mentor scheme in uni and then met Chloe and took the bus to town
  • I picked up some second-hand Xbox games and grabbed some food before heading home for a house movie night!
  • We all ordered food and watched Howl's Moving Castle. I had a 20-minute nap in the middle of the film but it was a great night!
  • Once the film was over, I headed up to my room and played Arkham Asylum until I was too tired to keep my eyes open

Tuesday
  • I had a quick shower and headed to uni in my comfy new Marilyn Manson hoodie and some leggings. Extreme comfort! On my way, I had a good chat on the phone with my grandad which was lovely!
  • I did some work in the psych building cafe and then headed to my seminar in the rain. I sat by the window on the 4th floor because we're across from Whitworth Hall and Manchester Museum which is a pretty lovely view
  • I am so tired and because of my intensive mindfulness course, i'm not leaving uni until 8pm. Probably going to fall asleep as soon as we go into a relaxing practice
  • Successfully conducted my interview for my latest lab class, and I just need to transcribe it all by Thursday, which shouldn't be too bad
  • I ended up flying through the transcription process and managed to get it all done straight after the interview itself! I will reward myself with a bit of reading before getting back to my lecture catch-up
  • I read the whole of We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which was really thought-provoking and well written!
  • My mindfulness class flew by and I went straight home to play Fallout 3 before bed!

Wednesday
  • Valentine's day! Today is the first time I am not single on Valentine's day and i'm so excited! Will won't tell me where we're going later though!
  • I had a day at home just doing some writing and working from bed before glamming myself up for the night! I wore my striped jumpsuit from Primark and looked GREAT!
  • He turned up at my door with a bunch of roses and some chocolates, which was so sweet! We went to Zizzi for Italian food and then Harvey Nichols bar for prosecco! It was such a wonderful evening and I felt so so lucky and spoilt!

Thursday
  • I got up bright and early to walk to uni with a couple of lovely friends! We stopped off at Costa and then I headed to the psychology building to set up a bake sale, which I helped run for the psychology peer mentors scheme!
  • The bake sale table looked amazing and so many mentors offered us cakes and treats to sell! Running the bake sale was so much fun too, even though I was pretty hungover!
  • After helping with the bake sale, I headed to a lab class and then home with a friend to hang out! There wasn't an episode of Riverdale so we watched drag queen videos!
  • After my friend had left, I got an email about the bake sale. Apparently, we raised way more than expected which is amazing!
  • The evening was a bit grim. I had a bit of a meltdown which came out of nowhere. Vowing to go back to the doctors next week to sort myself out!

Friday
  • Grabbed a toastie from Costa for breakfast thing morning as a payday treat! I went to the usual spot to get some work and emails done and then went for an Open Mind Writers meeting, which was super productive!
  • After the meeting, I grabbed another coffee with a friend and chilled for a while before meeting with my favourite lecturer for a chat
  • I then went over to the SU to chat with the lovely Women's Officer, who is always so great to chat to! What an angel! After saying goodbye, I headed into town for some much needed solitary shopping time! I popped into work to see a friend who has switched to weekday shifts and we had a quick catch up which was lovely!
  • I spent most of my time in town in a bit of a daze. I wasn't really paying attention to where I was going and I was kind of just living in my own head! Eventually, I snapped out of it and picked up a few bits and pieces from Lush before heading home to meet Will and chill out for the evening!

Saturday
  • Woke up early for my volunteering induction, which was at a community garden. It went really well and they even had a dog there!
  • Will and I took advantage of being out so early and went for a long walk, before heading to Wetherspoons for some lunch!
  • I went into town and met up with a work friend and we spent too much money as always! Picked up a few goodies from Kiko and a new bra on sale at Ann Summers

  • Work was fairly uneventful and then Will picked me up for a pint and a pizza, which was lovely!

Sunday
  • Early morning for work! I grabbed a quick snack before work and a lot of coffee to deal with the event that the store is putting on this morning! Too many customers too early in the morning!
  • Work dragged so much but I ran back in to buy some new pyjamas anyway! I then got a free Krispy Kreme doughnut and some lunch from M&S before heading home
  • I had the most chilled afternoon ever! I put on my new pyjamas and did nothing but play LEGO Star Wars until sleep! The best!

Wednesday 14 February 2018

Having an uncertain future is terrifying. Working towards something such as a career which is not guaranteed can feel super overwhelming and you can begin to question whether your hard work is worthwhile, whether you are good enough to succeed, whether you will end up doing something you hate rather than your goal career, etc. I am experiencing this right now! I am doing a psychology degree in the hopes of getting into a media psychology masters course and going into content creation and empowerment through media. I am doing my best to get experience AND qualifications but the uncertainty of my future can be so daunting! I am terrified of failure AND of doing well in my academics but still failing to attain my goal career! This is how I have tackled these fears to a point where I am way more focused on the present rather than worrying excessively about something that hasn't happened yet...

Accept lack of control

I know, this seems impossible! I am an utter control freak and the thought of doing this has at times felt so wrong and unnatural to me! However, in time I have realised that there are things that I cannot change no matter how hard I try and no matter how much I plan ahead. By realising that I should focus on what I can control about the present, I  am much more relaxed about the fact that I cannot completely and utterly determine and control my future! Anything could happen and while that used to terrify me, it is now almost a comforting thought!

Take steps towards what you want, no matter how small

Despite not having total control over the future, we do have some control and this depends on how hard we pursue our goals, no matter how uncertain. Although I am not certain that I will reach the career which I desperately long for, I try to make small steps towards it every day. That way, nothing I do feels like a massive waste of time, I am not dedicating everything I have to the pursuit of this one ambition. However, all of the small steps that I take will add up and add some certainty to my career path! Often, you cannot achieve everything that you want to in a single day. It takes work over time. Even small steps can build something certain! For instance, I may not have reached my career yet, but I am certain that I have built up relevant experience and I am certain that a lot of what I do, such as volunteering and even this blog, contributes towards my career. I am building something certain bit by bit until my whole path is certain. If it doesn't all work out, I have my 'certains' to fall back on.

Don't be scared to change direction

For some, the idea of change is just completely terrifying. I was always afraid that if I changed my direction then everything I have worked towards would be an absolute waste. I was planning to go into forensic psychology and I had read up the career options and had chosen a masters programme and was so set for the future. However, in the last few months, I have completely changed my direction. I want to go into media psychology and work towards creating empowering and inspiring content which encourages personal growth, the pursuit of change and the combatting of social and environmental issues. I am still working a lot on my commitments to mental health care, such as voluntarily facilitating group therapies and working towards building a mentoring scheme, but in a lot of extracurriculars, I have been focussing on more media and communication roles. Instead of dropping everything that you are already doing, try to tailor what you are already doing towards your new direction. It makes the change less daunting and means that everything you have done so far still has a purpose in your new direction.

Anchor yourself

It is important to have constants in your life with which you can anchor yourself. These can take many forms and can be a safe and certain place when you are dealing with uncertainty. No matter what happens, these anchors will be there for you to go back to. They can offer you stability and support. One form that an anchor can take is a place. For me, this place is my family home back in Wales. No matter what is happening here in Manchester, when I go back home to Wales nothing has changed. Everyone is still there and I can go on the same walks that I used to take when I was a teenager. Other anchor places can include public spaces such as libraries, museums and cafes, or private spaces such as your home, bedroom or a friend's place. Wherever this anchor is, the comfort that it can offer you in times of uncertainty can help so much!

Anchors don't have to be physical places. They can be people, such as family members, friends or mentors. People who you can go to when you need reassurance, guidance or just a chat. They can also be hobbies; something you can come back to when you need to forget about your uncertainties for a while. For me, this was always acting. No matter what was happening with my college work, university applications, friendship groups or work, I would always attend my weekly acting classes. The same people were always there and it just felt like something to come back to once a week to step out of my various stressful situations.

You don't always need a plan

Wing it! As someone who feels the need to plan absolutely everything in minute detail, the idea that something is uncertain and cannot be properly planned is awful and frustrating! Accepting that sometimes you need to just let things happen without a plan is an important part of dealing with uncertainty about the future. There's not much else I can say for this one, it's hard to let go of the fear of not having control, but so important for your mental wellbeing!

Quotes

I figured that I would end this post by listing some good quotes which inspire and encourage me in times of uncertainty.

"I spent a lot of years trying to outrun or outsmart vulnerability by making things certain and definite, black and white, good and bad. My inability to lean into the discomfort of vulnerability limited the fullness of those important experiences that are wrought with uncertainty: Love, belonging, trust, joy, and creativity to name a few." - Brene Brown

"Human spirit is the ability to face the uncertainty of the future with curiosity and optimism. It is the belief that problems can be solved, differences resolved. It is a type of confidence. And it is fragile. It can be blackened by fear and superstition." - Bernard Beckett

"I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring." - David Bowie

Monday 12 February 2018

Monday

  • Will woke me up at 6am when he left to go to work! I went straight back to sleep, slept through my alarms, and overslept til noon. Not a great start!
  • I felt pretty low and so didn't get out of bed for quite a while. I eventually decided to give up on the idea of leaving the house and decided to act as if it was still the morning and that I was just starting the day
  • I put in a hair mask and went through some emails to give myself a slow start to the day
  • I finally decided to leave my room at about 2pm to put some laundry in the washing machine and shower
  • After my shower, I put on some freshly washed pyjamas and changed my bedsheets in an attempt to make my surroundings feel refreshed. However, I ended up just getting back into bed and staring at the ceiling for about an hour. I won't go into the feelings that I was experiencing, they weren't very good though, unfortunately
  • I attempted to do a bit of work but ended up giving up and having a little healthy cry
  • I got my clothes out of the dryer and ordered a pizza
  • Once my flatmates got home, I spent a bit of time with them as they tend to make me feel a lil better! My lovely friend dyed my hair darker while we watched Moana
  • I went to bed and binge-watched Black Mirror before bed

Tuesday
  • After a pretty crappy day yesterday, I decided to get up a little bit early and to put some makeup on in order to boost my confidence a bit
  • I went into uni early to help run an event to help first years with their statistics assignments
  • After the workshop, I went straight to the psychology building cafe to do some work
  • My lovely friend and I then went to a workshop on 'Finding Motivation' and I worked out some truths about how I motivate myself and how I am growing as a person. I used to be very extrinsically motivated and I would only work hard in order to impress and please others. However, now I work with passion and my future career in mind
  • I went back to the psychology building cafe and did some writing. I edited and posted last week's Pull Yourself Together post
  • I went to my weekly mindfulness class, which went really well even though I fell asleep during practice. It made me realise how tired I really am!
  • I did a food shop on the way home and made an omelette when I got home
  • I queued up a couple posts for the rest of the week and then went up to bed

Wednesday
  • Left for university early this morning to give me time to grab a coffee! This is going to become my daily routine as it means that I am not rushing to uni and I get to enjoy my morning coffee a bit more!
  • I had an interesting forensic psychology lecture and then went to the psychology cafe to work with my lovely friend. I also had a meeting with my favourite lecturer and we had a great chat about writing and mental health!
  • I got to do a bit of admin and email organisation before going to a low mood therapy group
  • This week, I facilitated the group! It was a bit of a last minute thing but I ended up doing super well and I ended up receiving some thank-yous and a boost of confidence to facilitate more! I can't believe how well it went!
  • I then had a meeting at 6pm with Open Mind Manchester. I am a part of the external committee and we were laying down plans for the next few months. The meeting was super productive and I've completely blocked my schedule for the next month or so with work and volunteering!
  • On the way back from the meeting, which finished at about 8, I bought a meal deal and ate it in bed when I got home. I finished organising my emails and sorted all my bookmarks on my laptop

Thursday
  • Started the day by going to the psych building cafe to load up on caffeine before my seminar. I had a seminar on essay writing and then a really useful lab class
  • After the lab, I sat in the psychology building cafe and had a public cry for the first time in a while. I was a bit of an emotional mess but luckily not many people were around. Chloe went to the building next door for a while and then came back with a large latte for me because the psych building coffee machine was broken and she's an angel!
  • My Open Mind Manchester article was published! I have already received such a great response and people who haven't talked to me in ages have got in touch and been so supportive!
  • On the way home, I met up with my friend and we went back to mine for our weekly Riverdale viewing! The latest episode was so good and I hate that we have to wait another week for the next one!
  • After my friend had gone, the housemates and I had a bit of a drink, which turned into a lot of drinking and me doing some drunk online shopping (oops). Thankfully, I didn't go too overboard and I can't wait for my new Marilyn Manson hoodie to arrive!

Friday
  • I overslept AGAIN! Instead of beating myself up about it, I decided to get some work done at home so I caught up on some lectures and put on a hair mask and face mask
  • After doing some work, I had a shower, got dressed, and cleaned and mopped the kitchen
  • My lovely friend got home and we made dinner together and had a good chat!
  • Will came over and we went though some recipe books and planned out what we will be cooking together and baking together since he's a great cook and i'm pretty good at baking! We had a pretty early night which was lovely!

Saturday
  • Started the day by doing some work in bed, before getting up, getting dressed and doing my hair
  • A couple of friends and I went for brunch at The Anchor, which was amazing! I ate two brownies and a cream cheese bagel, and had two wonderful coffees!
  • After brunch, I hopped on the bus to town and managed to get a bit of shopping done before work! I picked up some flared trousers from Mango, some Pusheen stickers and a notebook from Paperchase, a couple of books from Waterstones, and a hair mask from Lush
  • Work was pretty slow and seemed to last forever! On the way home I ordered some food and ate that on my lovely friend's floor before we watched Mune, which was a lovely animated film!

Sunday
  • I have been waiting for this day all week! After a short shift, I am seeing my family for the first time since the Christmas break and they're meeting Will! Plus, my brother is giving me his old Xbox 360 and I am so excited!
  • On the way to work, I grabbed a cappuccino from Starbucks and chilled in the cafeteria with my good work friend! Work was so slow and, again, seemed to last forever!
  • Lunch with the family was so good! I met Will outside work and then we went to meet my family. It was so good seeing them again and they all got along super well with Will! We had a great lunch and a great chat! My dad had read my Open Mind article and had found it really interesting and was proud of me! I swear when he was talking about it and describing how it made him feel I could have cried! He told me that the optimism that I was putting across about recovery really broke the stigma for him and he understood mental health struggles more than he ever has!
  • Once we got home, Will and I set up the Xbox and played Lego Star Wars for HOURS! It made me so nostalgic and it was so fun! He ordered Indian food and we ate most of it while chatting with a couple of my housemates and then we were in bed and asleep before 9:30! Such an early night is unheard of for us!

In all, this week has been such a mix of emotions! My mental health has been so up and down but when looking back, I can see quite a few highs and achievements! I think reading and writing these weekly diaries is really helping me to see what I am doing right, instead of focussing on the lows! Thank you for reading! x

Milestones are often seen as once-in-a-lifetime, once-in-a-month, once-in-a-decade etc. thing. Don't get me wrong, a lot of them are! However, reaching these massive milestones can take a long time and the space of time between two milestones can feel like a lifetime! Whilst we're busy focussing on the big milestones, we can often miss all those small achievements and forget to feel proud, thankful or pleased with ourselves. Small achievements are often seen as insignificant and too small and trivial to be truly proud of, but this is a pretty damaging mentality. By thinking that only the big goals that we have matter, we can overlook the journey it takes to reach these goals and forget that we are always progressing, no matter whether or not we are close to our big goals!

Why should we care about our small achievements?

How about we stop sizing up our achievements? An achievement is still an achievement, no matter how significant it may seem! Plus, all those small achievements add up! Just think about it, you don't step into a class and find yourself immediately prepared for your final exam! Learning the content for each lesson is a step towards knowing all you need to know for the final exam! Attending each lesson is a small achievement and a step in the right direction! You made it to class, which means you got out of bed, got dressed, left the house and pushed yourself to attend for the sake of your own learning! Each step towards your goal is a step in the right direction and shouldn't go unnoticed!

It's nice to feel proud of yourself! By feeling proud about the small things, you look forward to the next time you have done something to be proud of and it makes reaching a big accomplishment all the more special because you have built up to it! Feeling proud for your smaller achievements is also a great way to build your self-confidence and to gain a better overall outlook on life. I'm not going to rattle on about the importance of positivity because you have probably heard it already (but it is pretty darn important). Sometimes it can be super difficult to feel good about yourself, but building a mentality where you appreciate even the smallest achievements and positives about yourself can really help you!

How do I go about appreciating the smaller things?

Instead of saying "I didn't do..." or "I was supposed to...", maybe try to say "at least I..." or "I made a start on...".

  • So maybe, you are writing an assignment which you want to finish early and you have set yourself a deadline. You have told yourself that you will have the assignment finished by the end of the day, but it's getting late and you feel yourself getting sleepy. You know that you need to get to bed but you haven't quite finished the assignment. Instead of punishing yourself by saying something along the lines of "I am useless and I haven't finished this assignment and now i'm falling asleep and I still have a bit to do", perhaps choose to say something like "I am super tired because I have worked hard on this assignment. I am further into the assignment now than I was this morning and I have definitely taken steps towards getting it done". Even if you're just saying it at first without really meaning it, once you make it a habit that's where the magic happens and the words start to sink in!

I know, seems easy right? The thing is, I used to be an over-worker and it was super damaging! I wouldn't let myself take breaks when I would study and if I did take a break then I would punish myself for it and not allow myself to sleep. At the time, I thought it was a good idea and that it was the only way I would get good grades! You probably guessed it, I burned myself out! I was exhausted, couldn't retain any information, and my grades actually fell! My point is, it's better to celebrate your small achievements by letting yourself rest than to only keep your milestones in mind and burn yourself out because you think you're not achieving anything and you're not working hard enough! Every little step towards your overall goal helps! However, this isn't always easy! When we are stuck in these damaging thought patterns, they become habits and can be very hard to stop doing! It's almost like having to reprogram your entire system of thinking!

Writing lists has also been a habit which has helped me greatly! I have started to write down what I have accomplished in a day rather than just constant long to-do lists which are almost impossible to complete! By keeping track of my small achievements, I have made it easier to look back on them. By noticing them more, I have begun to appreciate them more and it has led me to feel better at the end of a day and it has definitely improved my sleep pattern as I allow myself to go to bed instead of falling asleep whilst working!

Another useful change I have made to my to-do lists is to set small manageable goals which I know will be easy to achieve and not time-consuming. The satisfying feeling of ticking the boxes on my to-do list makes me appreciate every small goal I have achieved that day. Plus, it motivates me to complete a to-do list which means i'm more likely to complete my larger goals on a given day.

The take-home message

You cannot reach the big milestones without thinking small first and getting through every little small task. Every time you achieve in that task, you are one step closer to a milestone! Appreciate the journey to your goals, not just the destination! If you get too wrapped up in the large goals, you fail to realise how much you have actually achieved and what you have accomplished! By realising this and appreciating these small achievements, you can really boost your self-esteem and your perception of your self-worth!

I hope that you have found this helpful! If you have anything to add or ask, just leave a comment and I will get back to you asap! Thank you for reading! x

Wednesday 7 February 2018

Hello! January has finally come to a close! After what feels like the longest month in the history of the universe, it's time to write another favourites post! It has been a very stressful month and these favourites have helped me to pull through and have pretty much kept me going! I hope that you enjoy this list and I would love to know what your faves were this month!

The beauty products...

I'll mention my beauty faves first since this month has brought me a new skincare routine, some pretty new eyeshadows and some new faves!

I have been lusting after the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette* for so long, since it came out really! I have been umm-ing and ahh-ing for years and I finally own it! This has been my go-to palette all month and I am so glad that I finally snapped it up when it was on sale! I adore all the colours in this palette and the eyeshadows are such great quality! Possibly even my favourite palette of all time!

Another item I finally got to try this month was The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane*. This is a concentrated moisturising product and it is super easy to use! I apply a few drops every night before bed and after cleansing and I have noticed a change in my skin's texture almost immediately! My face feels smoother and more hydrated, which is super nice! A little goes a long way and this product lasts ages and is very reasonably priced at £5.50 from ASOS*!

The food...

I don't normally include food on these lists but I feel like i've had some incredible meals this month and I have found quite a few new faves! First, I want to talk about somewhere I ate out at recently! I finally went to Northern Soul Grilled Cheese in Manchester (near the Arndale) and I am so glad that I did! I had the simplest grilled cheese that they do and it was still the best grilled cheese I have ever had! It's also pretty affordable so I will definitely be back there soon!

This month I also discovered more veggie sweets! I have been looking for great gelatine-free sweets (other than percy pigs) and I think I have found my favourites! One sweet I was most hopeful to find was a good veggie peach rings alternative and I have found that Goody Good Stuff summer peaches are the BEST! Honestly, I love everything about them! Their texture is perfect and they taste so good! The cola bottles from Free From Fellows are also so so yummy! I have never liked cola bottles but I love these!

The reading...

This month I have rekindled my love for magazines! In particular, I am absolutely in love with Womankind magazine! The range of topics they cover is so good, I love to have a lot of variety in what I am reading so this magazine is such a breath of fresh air! Their website is also definitely worth a visit, it's full of great and interesting content!

I have also begun to collect Do/ books. They cover a wide variety of topics and they are so well layed out and visually striking! They are quick and easy reads but contain so much insight and wisdom! The fact that they are written by a variety of authors is also super appealing because they have introduced me to new influential people and I love that! The Do company also run talks and lectures and have a massive range of topics covered so there is definitely something for everyone! If you like TED talks then definitely check these out!

The miscellaneous...

Another month, another favourite podcast! Get It On with Dawn O'Porter is a witty and interesting podcast about fashion with some fab guest interviews, including Dermot O'Leary, Chris O'Dowd and Dawn French! It is such a joy to listen to!

My boyfriend took me to see The Greatest Showman in January and I completely fell in love with the soundtrack! The film is stunning BUT the soundtrack is the real selling point! It is so beautiful and fun to sing along to! Even if you don't see the film, give the soundtrack a listen to on Spotify! Trust me!

In January, Fall Out Boy released their latest album, Mania! I have listened to it more than anything else this month, even though it wasn't released until the 19th. It just gets me so ready to tackle the day! It's mostly upbeat which is why I listen to it whilst walking to uni every morning or doing my work! Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea is my new fave song!

Other albums I have been listening to this month include:
  • Dua Lipa - Dua Lipa
  • The Family Jewels - Marina and the Diamonds
  • Controversy - Prince
  • Ruins - First Aid Kit
  • Stoney - Post Malone
  • The Pale Emperor - Marilyn Manson
  • Ride The Lightning - Metallica

Finally, this month I have totally rekindled my love of writing! I have loved posting to this blog and putting my own content out there! I feel so proud of everything I have put up on this lil internet space and I am so thankful for the friendships this has led me to make and for the feedback I have recieved from you all! Writing has become so therapeutic for me and my counsellor has even given me a space of time in which to not visit her to see how I get on! Writing has honestly done more for my mental health than any therapy (although my meds are also so helpful and are probably the reason I am able to pluck up the courage to put myself across on this platform)!

I think that's everything I wanted to mention! As always, thanks for reading! I am hoping to get back on track with queueing up posts after having a little rest after exams! Thanks for your patience and lovely support lately! x
